Disposing of poultry mortalities on-farm is a constant challenge, and while there are a variety of methods for dealing with this, not all are created equal. Biosecurity, cost, labor, odors, and regulations all complicate the task and make it a burden for growers.
Dehydration offers a practical solution using controlled heat, airflow, and agitation to process deadstock quickly. Disposal costs are reduced because there is no need to haul mortality to a rendering plant or rely on external pickups. Biosecurity is improved as soil and groundwater are protected by keeping the mortality contained. Unwanted odor, flies, and scavengers are also significantly reduced.
Dehydration also avoids environmental penalties as biosecurity legislation increases. Another benefit is that the dry sterile by-product that is produced can often be reused on-farm, recovering value instead of simply disposing of dead matter.
